Many of the environmental issues that leaders struggle with now are results of power generation, extraction of minerals, poor farming practices and generally a bias against replacing old methods of interacting with the environment due to cost and familiarity with past practices. The old economic paradigms cannot be overstated either; as many environmental issues are the result of practices known to be destructive but still are supported by previous economic policies.

Environmental issues often can be readily mitigated with widespread adoption of new technologies and economic policy changes. Technology can allow for conservation of resources and replacement of scarce for readily available resources.
