The NCSD established several years ago an outlet or rather a vehicle for those green technologies that may address important sectoral issues which can,  for example help our overall mission of “heading off emissions” by examining processes that might “engineer out” emissions from production cycles thereby not creating emissions through combustion. A good case in point is the repurposing of “ industrial petroleum coke” that every petroleum refinery in the world creates as part of the refinery process.

Petroleum coke, last year was a $30 billion dollar market and is growing significantly. Petcoke is almost pure carbon and thermally dense. Many global industries from cement to power producton  burn petcoke. Yet, the emissions into the atmosphere of this volume of of carbon emissions asks a clear question: what else can we do with it? Imagine removing millions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere just from this one sector!

The Center for Green Innovation and the private sector groups CGI works with are currently working with a true innovation company converting petcoke into carbon cloth and carbon building materials! Since petcoke is in its raw state is rich in almost pure carbon such conversion to new carbon technology products is made more efficient. By rexamining industrial processes in the light of current needs NCSD/ CGI believes it can discover many similar repurposing opportunities.

The Center for Green Innovation (herein refered to as the “CGI”) is an innovative business and technology showcase and market accelerator.
